Behind the music

Readers often ask if any of the characters in HOTEL are real, and my answer is always the same––just one, the legendary Oscar Holden, who did indeed play at the Black Elks Club as well as just about every jazz club and venue in the Northwest. And there just so happens to be an exhibit at the Northwest African American Museum (NAAM) featuring Oscar, from April 26-December 26, 2010.

Here’s his daughter Grace (who will celebrate her 80th birthday this month!) performing one of her father’s songs.

If you’d like to see Grace in person, you might want to mark May 2nd on your calendar. She’ll be performing with her younger brother, Jimmy Holden on keyboard, at the historical Washington Hall during their open house celebration. Washington Hall once hosted the likes of Count Basie, Marian Anderson, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Lewis, and Martin Luther King Jr, and a certain piano player...

Wow, this woman is incredible to listen to. And she's so capable at 80, which is awesome too. Can you imagine how wonderful it must have been to grow up around music the way she must have with a father like that? Just think Jamie. Some day people might think that about your kids and how you have influenced them with your writing.
