Seattle Central Community College: Seattle, WA

I'd never spoken at a college before so I didn't know what to expect. What I didn't expect were 90 people, most were students of course, but some had traveled over from Bainbridge Island and were personally affected by events in Hotel, namely the Japanese Internment. One woman had even been born in Minidoka.

Also, a group of ESL students were reading Hotel in the classroom. They gave me some personal notes regarding their thoughts on the book as it related to their own experiences––leaving one culture and fitting into another. (Thank you).

A huge thanks to Becca for inviting me, and to the Elliot Bay Book Company.

You did a good job in SCCC. I couldn’t believe that I had a chance to meet you, the Author of the first love story that I read for ESL class. This was the first time I joined to school events. Especially, all people in my class and me were really glad to have a great time to listen your stories and learned how hard you work to create a perfect book for us . My teacher Rebecca was really excited and surprising the whole class when she shared the news that you would come to see her students. Not only my class, you were the one getting famous in my school, too. Many teachers in SCCC had started to read The Hotel before you came. Besides that, all ESL students were recommended to join in the events by their ESL teacher. After they met you I knew some of them tried to buy The Hotel and enjoy it. Anyway, thanks for Rebecca’s idea invited you come to SCCC and thank you very much for spent time with us.
