Miami Book Fair: Miami, FL
Tuesday, November 17, 2009
I have new respect for touring musicians. I used to think that the “last show” on a concert tour would be fantastic, because the band would be saving the best for last, when in reality they must be dog tired, road-weary, and otherwise just itching to get home to whatever normal is.
That was my fear going to Miami. That the last stop on my tour would be like the last shot out of a roman candle, all fizzle, no sizzle. Instead, the Miami Book Fair was an amazingly good time.
I was slated to be on a panel, but the other two authors cancelled leaving me alone with a hot microphone and a crowd of booklovers. It was a great way to end my travels. Thanks for being there!
And beyond that, I had time to play literary tourist, catching talks by Wally Lamb, Sherman Alexie, James McManus, Iggy Pop, and Ralph Nader—who someone aptly described as “a serial killer returning to the scene of the crime.”
It was great to finally met BookReporter CEO, Carol Fitzgerald, in person, comic creators Dawud Anyabwile (Brotherman) and Maurice Novembre, Shawn Bean, and more cool authors than I can even remember. Plus it was nice to hang out with John Pipkin again, whom I had the pleasure of meeting in Austin weeks earlier.
The weather was gorgeous the food was amazing and the journey was memorable.
But baby, it’s good to be home.
