Pack up the chainsaw kids — I’m heading to Texas

The good news: I’m at the Texas Book Festival this Sunday. The bad news: the day before is Halloween and I’ll be spending most of it trick-or-treating my way through the Denver Airport, en route to Austin. Not that Texas isn’t scary––it gave us George W. Bush and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but I’d probably rather stay home for the holidays. (Though it’s been snowing all day, so that opinion is suddenly changing).

Speaking of All Hallows’ Eve, I’ve been engaging in my typical pre-Halloween ritual of listening to an old album (on CD) in honor of my favorite costume. Way back in the fifth grade, my grandmother sewed me a mythical Peter Criss jumpsuit, using only the KISS Destroyer album as a reference. My friend Sean (who wore an incredible homemade jawa outfit, complete with flashlights duct-taped to his head) did my make-up.

You just can’t buy that kind of homespun mayhem at Party Universe.

Dressing up this year? I have an author party to go to this Saturday, where I’m tempted to dress as a certain drummer...

Am I going to have to be the internet jerk and say "Pictures or it didn't happen"? Or are you going to hunt down a copy of a picture I'm SURE exists and post it?

I say "mythical" because I can't find the photos. Though they do exist, in a box...somewhere. My mom's photo albums fell somewhat into disarray. She disassembled them to make scrap books, and never finished them. I did keep the costume though, for years.

This is for Jamie. Thank you for the wonderful "Hotel ....! I grew up in Seattle. Your love story spoke of so many things I remember. My best friend, Nobuko Kodama, was interned then. I guess we were about 16 yrs at the time. Although we lived in a suburb called Sunnydale, and the Kodama's had greenhouses where they sold plants, the story of the Japanese departures left a hole in all our hearts. We loved our neighbors. The Tomitas, Higashis, Yakotas among others were taken away for a long time. My dad always kept watch over the greenhouses, so kids would not destroy them.
Your book meant a lot to this 83 year old woman. Our proms were always celebrated in Chinatown, we had a Japanese dentist, I took classes in Japanese flower arranging at age l3. My memories came flooding back, bitter and sweet. Thank you again. I shall read all of your writings I can find. Best to you for a bright future.

Austin is THE BOMB!!!! That's where I lived before Great Falls. Coolest city ever. Well, besides Ashland...

I wish I was dressing up this year! I had a killer idea for a costume--I'd dress up like the Yuki-onna my MC from my latest WiP. I even have a perfect vision in my head how to put the costume together and ideas and look all ice-queen like.

Sigh...perhaps next year. :)
