Good news for the functionally illiterate

illiterate2.jpg
Can’t read? Not much for book lernin’? Then you’re in luck! The latest news is that Random House audio will be publishing Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet as an audio book––so now those voices in your head will have good company.

Seriously though, I’m beyond stoked. I love audio books and have a monthly subscription at audible.com. (Why don’t you?) I just listened to Garth Stein’s, The Art of Racing in the Rain, and it’s wonderfully produced, as well as just being a fantastic read. Books like Rain, written in first-person, just seem to come alive in audio form. I can’t recommend it enough.

I’m convinced that books and podcasts are the real reasons iPods were invented. That and to keep my kids mesmerized on long road trips.

Do you listen to audio books? If not, I have one I’d like to recommend. It comes out next January…

Is that billboard for real? Really??

And congrats on the audio and German!

If it's on the internet, it has to real, right?

Are you going to be reading your book, or will you get James Earl Jones?

I second JEJ as a reader. Excellent news, Jamie!

I'd rather have Dave Niehaus, the "Voice of the Mariners"...

But I thought the book had a happy ending?

Hey-Oooooooo...

Yeah. The Mariner's finally opened up the corporate checkbook and what did it get us? The worse record in baseball. They should have worried about coaching before they worried about stacking their roster.

Lou, where are you??

He's safely with my Cubs, thanks. If only our pitchers weren't made of glass.

Awesome news on the audiobook. Keep it up.

I'm a total audiobook and podcast addict. I'm currently listening to I Robot, and have a pile of other books already ripped to mp3 and ready to go on my iPod (ok, my wife's iPod, as the first generation shuffle I inherited from her doesn't play nicely with audiobook files).

Oh, and sorry Jamie, but I hope my Braves can exploit the 08 Mariners sucking so bad for at least the three games they're playing here this weekend... after that the M's can get good and I'll be fine with it. The Grady Hospital Braves need it (Three of our opening day starting pitchers, our opening day set-up guy and closer, and two of our opening day outfielders are on the DL).

ooohhhhh you should ask Card to do a special intro for your audiobook! (he's doing them for sci-fi books on audible already... I bet he'd be willing to "help out" a former student)

You shouldn't make fun of illiterate people. That's a serious issue for many.

My wife gave me Stein's book for fathers day. I read the first chapter and went "What the hell are you giving me here?!?!". When I finished the last chapter I was bawling my eyes out.

I certainly couldn't handle that book in audio form.
