Tripping the road fantastic
Thursday, November 20, 2008
I’m off for a few days on a little road trip. Part recreation, part medication. Actually, my wife is having Lasik done and when you live on the hinterland, unless you want your surgery performed by a DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) instead of an MD, most of the time you have to hit the road, and I’m the designated seeing-eye driver.
(I had Lasik done two years ago by the way, and highly recommend it. My vision is better than 20/20 and aside from the strange voices in my head now, it’s been marvy. When I jokingly mentioned hearing voices in the follow-up with my eye surgeon his only reply was, “Hey, it’s the price we pay for this alien technology.”)
Back to the road trip thing––I spoke with my incredible publicist at Random House and it looks like we’ll be adding a few more gigs in the great northwest. That means I’ll possibly be doing 14 events in 21 days. Not counting drop-in signings. Wow. I get jet lag just thinking about it.
And speaking of road trips, here’s a photo from a classic college getaway. I think I was all of 19. We drove from Seattle all the way down the Oregon Coast to Ashland, in matching cobalt-blue Volkswagen Sciroccos. Yes, we had matching cars. On a scale of geek-chic, with a (1) being—getting a fake ID so you can vote, and (10) equal to attending a Mike Relm show, I was a solid (6.5).
Have a great weekend. The voices are telling me it’s time to go.
