Bittersweet Tour 2009

I have to admit, I’m a sucker for most Cameron Crowe movies.* Especially Almost Famous, his semi-autobiographical tale of life on the road. A movie I can’t stop thinking about now that I have a book tour ahead of me.

Granted, a newbie author’s book tour is about as raucous as a deep tissue massage, still, there’s something undeniably romantic about the notion. I only wish that we could somehow package the tour with other writers––just a little something to liven up the down time. Think Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, all traveling together––wait, bad example…

The reality is that for an author, it’s just you, and maybe a publicist, (and of course my massive entourage of personal trainers, chefs, body-guards, stylists, accountants, photographers, groupies, groupie-handlers, posse-wannabes, and assorted astrologers and pet-psychics) traveling from venue to venue, hoping for a good crowd.

And unless you’re a rock star like Stephenie Meyer or Neil Gaiman, attendance at book events is a big unknown. So to help shed some light on the situation, here is a sneak peek at my upcoming book tour:

I just wanted to get it out there early in case you needed to request vacation so you can camp out days in advance for a good seat. Or quit your job, sell your home and actually move to one of these cities so you can attend. Hey, I’m just trying to help.

Also, these will be the places where I’ll be speaking, reading, signing, doing an interpretive dance, etc. But I’ll also be hitting as many independent bookstores in each area, doing as many drop-in signings as I possibly can. If pressed for time I may have to use a look-alike, so come by and see one of us.

*Vanilla Sky being the one exception. What the heck was that about?

Oh, and for anyone in Great Falls, I will be doing an event here. Since we don't have an indy bookstore, it'll probably be at Hastings. More info to come...

What's that? You're coming to Dallas? We'll have to grab a drink while you're in town.

I think you'll do swell, attendance-wise, Jamie. I didn't have anywhere NEAR the buzz for my book that you had, and my crowds were just fine. I wouldn't sweat it one bit.

Doing Politics & Prose anytime soon? I'll try to catch you there.

any chance you might be coming east for some book signings? I would really like to see the interpretative dance...

Jaye--you're on.

Brian & Ello--there's a slim chance that I might be in DC for a gig mid February, if so, then I'll have to check out Politics & Prose...

Sounds great, Jamie. And if you can come down to St. Louis (Left Bank Books rocks!), maybe after Milwaukee, let me know. We'll grab a drink and I'll bring bunches of friends to your reading.

You'll love the folks at Schwartz's--they are fantastic!

You're coming to The King's English!! I will SO come see you there!!

I would love to take you out for dessert or something afterward, but knowing how tours often go, I will totally leave that up to you. (I hear that an tour sleep vs. chocolate is an easy choice . . . in favor of sleep.:))

Can't wait to meet you IRL!!!

Sweet! Kev and I will be first in line in Seattle and Tacoma - and we may just have to road trip and catch you Bellingham and maybe even Portland. ;)

I know I live waaaaay up north, but if you can make it to Toronto Canada, I will definitely take you out for dinner and show you around. (If you have time).
Good luck with everything,

paul :-)

Ooohhhh! The Crow Collection! It's exquisite.

Aprilynne--I'll be packing each official tour date with a ton of drop-in signings, but I'm always free for desert! I've never been to the King's English, but I've heard great things.

Maryke--I think the Tacoma event will actually be at the Panama Hotel. University Books is partnering with the hotel to do something in the ID, which would be cool. Grace Holden, the daughter of one of the only non-fictional character in the book might come and sing!

Awesome!! I'll email you when the event gets a bit closer.:)

Sweet! You're coming to my town! I'll so be there, book in hand.

Push for Toronto, kiddo, and I'm there!

Hey, wow! You'll be in my neck of the woods on February 25! Judy's right, the folks at Schwartz's are fabulous. I will definitely come to see you...it's going on the calendar now.

PS: LOOOOVE the cover!!!!!

Oops, I spoke too soon. Looks like we're adding a few more dates in the Northwest. Sorry, still no Toronto... :(
November 20, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJamie Ford
Yay, you're coming to Tattered Cover! We'll definitely have a crowd for you! We'll even take you out and get you some drinks after, if you want.

Jamie,

So happy to see you're coming to the Tattered Cover in Denver!

Tis will be lovely to meet you (and have you sign your book with a strawberry-scented glitter pen).

I'll see you in Menlo Park, CA. And I enjoyed Vanilla Sky. Not entirely sure what it was about, and the original made a lot more sense, but I enjoyed the long, strange trip that it was.

Oh boy! I'll definitely see you in Menlo Park.

Oooh, and maybe Tattered Cover. I love that store. I would not have survived school without it.
November 25, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMar
Oooh, yeah. The King's English is a great book store. As is the Tattered Cover. And Schwartz in Milwaukee! (Too bad you won't be there during baseball season, so you can catch a never-say-die Milwaukee Brewers game.) It'll be fun just doing an event of any kind at some of those bookstores.

Yay for coming to Dallas! I'm in Austin, but my parents are in Dallas and just might like to see me. I might even skip class. Will you be speaking or just signing or what?
December 1, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterChandler Marie Craig
Chan--I think all of the events are talks and signing. Though one of the California events is more of an author tea, or something like that. Dallas is definitely a talk, Q&A, signing.
December 1, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJamie Ford
I hope I get my copy from Amazon before you swing through town. Not currently set to ship until Feb 2!!
December 5, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterTimm
I bet you'll get it sooner than that. I've been told with a Jan. 27 release date, books could be shipping as soon as Jan 15. Plus, Amazon is a stone's throw from where you live. Then again...
December 5, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJamie Ford
I'll be at the event in Dallas. Better to buy my book ahead of time, or will they have plenty at the event? Which is better for your sales?
February 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJulie
Hi Julie--how sweet to think of that. I think a local indie store is handling sales at the event, so that's probably your best (and easiest) bet.
